The story behind our journey

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

I love this quote.  It captures the philosophy that has guided many decisions Rob and I have made in our lives.  But now, we are going to really "throw off the bowlines" and embark on a long adventure in parts of Africa and Indochina.  We will be travelling for 11 weeks, from January into March 2012.

Madagascar is a key destination on this journey.  In fact, this whole undertaking began as a trip to the exotic island in the Indian Ocean.  Madagascar has been Rob's dream all his life.  As a young boy he poured over the pages of his encyclopedia of animals, gazing at the colour plates of the rare and beautiful animals on this far-off island, and dreaming that one day he would see them for himself.  And so, with retirement nearly a full-time reality for both of us, we decided to plan an adventure that would feature this special island.  We will explore Madagascar and Zanzibar, Tanzania and South Africa and then fly on to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Our journey will take us to the Indian Ocean and across it.  We hope, indeed, to catch the trade winds in our sails.  Please follow us on our journey. We plan to post in this blog as we travel, and we invite you to sign up with your email address to receive our updates.
